The Minister of the Interior, Rauf Aregbesola has asked the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to ensure the issuance of Nigerian passports within forty-eight hours to qualified applicants. The minister spoke about this while inaugurating the NIS management retreat.
According to him, the state now has up-to-the-minute equipment that makes it easier for rapid issuance of passports within forty-eight hours. In his own words, an “unusual economy” has developed around the process of acquiring the Nigerian passport, which can only be fixed if NIS officials do away with human contacts and deal with racketeering and the numerous bottlenecks in the system. He urged the NIS to do away with bureaucracy and embrace technology, which is sure to make the process faster and easier for everyone involved.
He continued by emphasizing that in order to obtain this objective, the right infrastructure and man power must be mobilized. Only then can the whole process of acquiring an international passport be much less stressful and much more efficient for both the NIS and for the Nigerian public.
